St. Jude Summer Plus Fellowship
Rhodes and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital work together to offer qualified Rhodes students an intensive research experience that pairs students with St. Jude scientists and places them into the hospital’s professional laboratories for a period of two summers and the intervening academic year. Through this experience, students become fully engaged citizens in the scientific community of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a world-class pediatric clinical and research facility focusing on cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases.
Students work on independent research projects, participate in lectures, group meetings, and onsite discussions. They may present their work at local, national, and international venues. Many of the participants go on to pursue advanced degrees in medicine, pharmacy, veterinary science, neuroscience, genetics, biomedical engineering and other related areas.
Participants are required to attend St Jude orientation on May 26 and continue full time work until July 31st for the first summer of the fellowship. Summer housing on Rhodes campus is paid for from May 24 to August 1. This fellowship includes summer stipend of $6000.00. During the following academic year students work for 8-10 hours per week culminating in a presentation at Rhodes Symposium. Work during the academic year is eligible for F11 credit. Students then finish the fellowship with 10 weeks of full time engagement in the second summer. Eligible students may conduct Honors Research in their mentor’s lab.
Rising seniors (current juniors) are not eligible for this fellowship.
Rhodes/UT Neuroscience Research Fellowship
This fellowship provides an opportunity for students with an interest in the neurosciences to gain extensive research experience at the Neuroscience Institute/Center of Excellence at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, located just 10 minutes from the Rhodes campus.
Students must commit to one summer (8 weeks) of full-time work, as well as 8 to 10 hours per week during the academic year. They will engage in a project that culminates in a formal research report, and students will be required to present their work at regional and/or national meeting. Students will have the opportunity to extend their fellowship for a second summer. Eligible students may conduct Honors Research in their mentor’s lab.
This fellowship is available for students following their second or third year at Rhodes. Housing in the East Village residence halls will be available during the summer. Preference will be given to students who are interested in extending this experience beyond the one- year commitment.
